About

Making a difference one smile at a time!

Michaels Smiling Starfish was founded as a not for profit organization in honor of Michael Whitehead who transitioned in 2014 from brain cancer at the age of 22. His zest for living, loving and laughing is our everlasting inheritance. Surprises, affection, and thoughtful presents were the GIFTS bestowed upon all people he crossed paths with. Our objective is to continue his legacy of happiness and smiles.

Mission Statement: Providing encouragement, hope and joy to our community through services, events and counseling to create long lasting memories.

We want to bring you or someone you nominate a smle. Contact us for more information. Our organization is here to help you smile no matter what your health, socioeconomic, or other biographical factors are. We help those who need a smile. We are here to lend a hand up not hand out.

Starfish Poem

The Starfish Poem (Attributed to Loren Eiseley)
Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore and picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, “Good Morning! What are you doing?” The young man paused looking up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.” “Guess I should of asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?” “The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in they’ll die.” But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, passed the breaking waves and said-
“It made a difference for that one!”

Smile for Me – by Mark Pasqualino

I knew your soul was safe with God; still tears fell that you were gone.
I sang your Spirit home today; and drummed your journey on.
I prayed for Spirit to guide me; I prayed for heaven’s grace.
I prayed for divine intervention; it was then I saw your face.
I thought you might have a message for me, words of love to convey.
Your gleaming eyes simply smiled at me; as I listened to what you might say.
What can I tell them, how can I help…is there something you want me to do?
I know you don’t want us spending life’s precious moments, not living, but crying for you.
But the tears keep on flowing the grief deep and sad the family distraught yet okay.
It was decided we’d simply celebrate your life and gather on a beautiful day.
But still I was seeking, wanting to hear you; or looking for something to see.
It came so subtle, when I saw your face, as you simply said; “Smile for me”.
Smile for my Mother Michelle, her loving strength did carry me through.
Smile through your hardest nights, smile through your toughest day.
Smile for my life with you and the days I’ve walked the Earth.
Smile for the joy you felt the moment of my birth.
Smile for the years gone by and the ways you’ve seen I’ve grown
Smile for the Love You gave and all the joy I’ve known.
Smile my dear sweet sister Katrina, at the love I have for you.
Smile for this wonderful man named Joe, who entered into our lives.

Smile for his lovely daughter Lexy, another sister in my eyes.
Smile for Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, my cousins left behind.
Smile for me, the way I like to, the big and goofy kind.
Smile for all my family, whether estranged, we still are kin.
Know that here in heaven we forgive all earthly sin.
Please smile for my lovely wife, my Kim it’s you I adore.
Know I will forever love you from this side of heaven’s door.
Smile for time we’ve spent and the love I have for you.
Know that one of my biggest smiles was the day I said “I Do”.
Smile for my daughter Anna, let her see my love through your eyes
Share with her my dreams and visions that she may touch the sky.
Let her see me love her, through the love you have for me.
Smile for me the pride of a father; let her know I see.
Smile at each moment life brings and let goodness lead your way.
Smile at the moonlit nights, smile at each leaf upon each tree
Smile at the mountain views and the desert’s endless sand.
Smile into each other’s eyes when you hold each other’s hand.
Smile that our souls are one, from now through eternity.
And as you grin to greet each new day; Smile an extra Smile for me.
So, smile at the rainbow; yes smile at the sea.
